Are Root Canals Painful?

Root canals in Teaneck, NJ, are not painful. They are “pain-relieving” treatments that restore tooth function and vitality.

Let’s explore what root canals are and when you might need one.

What Is a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal treatment is a procedure performed under local anesthesia. After the anesthetic thoroughly numbs the area, your dentist carefully extracts infected materials from the canal of your tooth. After infection removal, we carefully rinse the inner tooth to promote healing. Then, we seal it temporarily. At a future visit, we will finish treatment with a restoration.

Your dentist usually recommends a crown restoration to support the tooth. If the infection was minor and the tooth was not compromised, we may use a tooth-colored filling instead.

When Are Root Canals Necessary?

Tooth root infections are typically painful and cause facial or jaw swelling. Patients often call for an emergency dental appointment in our Teaneck office. In rare cases, you may not experience pain. This means the tooth nerve is compromised or no longer conductive. However, without prompt treatment, you’re still at risk for infection spread and loss of the tooth.

Tooth root infections may result from any of the following:

  • Untreated tooth decay
  • Injury to the tooth or root
  • Poor oral hygiene

Basically, if the tooth is compromised and bacteria penetrate the canal, you’re at risk for a root infection requiring treatment.

You can lower your risks for infection through regular dental exams and teeth cleanings. You should also brush and floss at least twice daily. Finally, wear the proper oral appliance if you play sports or are diagnosed with bruxism (teeth grinding). We recommend consistently reporting oral health changes to your dentist, including sudden or ongoing tooth sensitivity.
